Usually this wouldn’t be a problem, but I just broke my leg so I have to stay at home while I recover and do the physio or training or whatever they talk about, so I’m using Facebook a LOT at the moment (probably too much lol).

Anyway so this Facebook quotes site says that it’s going to be full of interesting sayings and proverbs and stuff that you can put into your status and people will be impressed by it – I’m not convinced yet but I will keep reading.

The thing I want to find the most is those special Facebook statuses that have cool characters or signs in them (like the ones I talked about before) – they’re excellent and really make people press ‘like’ and leave comments on my page. Maybe I should start my own website?

Anyway, the one I like the best on that website is: 43% of all statistics are worthless. It reminds me of the high school maths class, where the teacher was completely useless (but a funny guy). I’ve narrowed them down into three different categories of status – you want to hear them? I know you do!

The first is jokes – funny jokes. I used to write updates on Facebook a lot, but every time I had to include my name in the status message. I thought this was really annoying, because I couldn’t put jokes into the box (unless I wanted to be the butt of them!). Finally, when they removed the name thing, I could use my own material – so there it went! Facebook status update jokes!

The second type of updates, after jokes, was the witty type of status messages which were similar to jokes, but just one-liners. They usually included a nice pun or gag, and people seem to really love them when they’re inside a Facebook home page feed.

The final type of status message for Facebook was given to me when I was on holiday last year – I fell in love with a Spanish bargirl and then I added her on Facebook…ever since, I used Facebook to pass her messages about how much I missed her and loved her. Romantic Facebook statuses are now my forté!

Using the Facebook status to your advantage

There are a number of different ways, and each requires a little thought. The most important way to get your message spread out across the web is by making people click ‘Like’ on your post, or to comment on it. Comments will mean that more people will see your message, and also friends of your friends (so it’s not just your list, but an exponential number as your funny Facebook status spreads across the internet). So how can you encourage comments?

- Controversy

Pick a topic, any topic, and say something controversial about it (and then include a link to a post about the same subject on your blog or website). You’ll be amazed by how quickly people are willing to comment and maybe even criticize you for what you say on Facebook. This method is called ‘flame bait’ and it works amazingly well.

- Humour

If you can make a comment funny and make your readers laugh, you’ve already won half the battle. Crack a joke in your status and they’ll click ‘like’ faster than you can say ‘increased sales’. It’s simple really!

Jokes have been around since the dawn of time, but using witty one-liners, puns and irony in your Facebook status can guarantee that people keep coming back for more every day. You can choose to put normal jokes into your link (Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side….etc), however often they might not be appreciated by the upwardly mobile and cynical Facebook crowd – so you should probably try more witty Facebook statuses or some sarcasm perhaps. It’s up to you really, but the main thing to remember is that the best Facebook status is one which someone will read and then process…and then laugh about!

So how can you use your funny Facebook status to gain supporters and friends on Facebook?

Well this is in effect a loaded question – you can’t ‘grow’ your support per se, but what you can do is improve the amount of exposure that you receive on the site by having people ‘Like’ and comment on your status updates. Why would you want this? Well it’s simple – Facebook uses a system which promotes certain comments within your friend’s status walls based on how much activitiy they have. Activity means comments and likes. They come from people reacting to what you say! So how do you make them react to what you say? Now people can use any type of update that they want and it will show up nicely in other people’s friend feeds. People have to think less, and don’t’ have to use the third-person all the time (which is annoying for both the writer and the reader). Now the addition of jokes to the site means that people can go back to the old style of sharing humour with eachother to increase the social bond, which is extremely important if a site like this is going to survive long term.

It is true that Facebook is the largest social network in the world, and now the key way of sharing information on the site is via Facebook status updates. Why, then, are people still talking about the possibility of Facebook failing? One reason is the case study of Myspace and how it managed to go from the number one social network in the world to a niche music social network for bands and other promoters, all in the space of a couple of years. People stopped coming to their site and they stopped in their millions. Myspace’s core product did not get worse, far from it, but Facebook’s approach was better. Why? To be continued…

Funny Facebook status

Firstly, what is a funny Facebook status? Well there are three types – the first of which is in the form of a joke. In the past, jokes would be a form of communication which would bring whole communities together, however nowadays they have fallen out of favour more and more as people have moved more online to communicate and less and less in person.

So what about using a throwback joke in a Facebook status?

In the past it was impossible to use jokes in Facebook statuses, because the update messages always needed to begin with the name of the person who was writing it – for example ‘Sammy is….’. This caused a lot of problems, usually because people would try (and fail) to fit their messages around their name. Facebook, however, adapted to this situation and decided to remove the need to use your name at the front of the update, so now it is just an empty box.
